Hey St. Mary's. 👋

Spring is doing that thing where you need a coat one day and feel stupid for wearing it the next.

Once the weather turns, staying inside starts to feel like a personal failure. So if you want a plan that's actually local and worth leaving the house for, here are 15 family outings around St. Mary's County that still have some personality.

Let's get into it.

1. Board the Maryland Dove at Historic St. Mary's City

The Maryland Dove is one of those spots that reminds you St. Mary's doesn't need to manufacture charm. It’s a full-scale, historically accurate replica of the 17th-century tall ship that brought the first colonists here.

Kids get to climb around the decks of a massive wooden boat. You get to call it educational. Historic St. Mary's City has that particular local mix of waterfront calm, deep history, and school-trip energy that still works on a weekend.

Wear decent shoes. Ship stairs are steep and very committed to the 1600s.

2. Hang Out at Wieck Community Park (Miedzinski Park) 🌳

This one is in Leonardtown (formerly known as Miedzinski Park) and it means business.

The anchor is a massive three-story climbing treehouse. Kids see it from Leonard Hall Drive and their minds are made up. There's also a multi-person zipline and a modern inclusive playground layout.

The stadium-style seating for parents in the center is a quietly excellent design choice. You can actually sit down, watch the chaos, and have five minutes that feel manageable.

3. Take the Water Taxi to St. Clement's Island 🚤

This one looks more planned than it is, which works in your favor.

You start at the St. Clement's Island Museum in Colton's Point, hop the water taxi, and the day suddenly feels intentional. The ride over is half the experience. The island itself is calm, historic, and easy to explore without much effort.

Check the weather and the museum schedule before you go, the river settled the "should we go?" debate long ago.

4. Climb the Piney Point Lighthouse Museum

Piney Point Lighthouse Museum covers a lot of ground in a compact stop. Built in 1836, it’s the oldest lighthouse on the Potomac. You get water views, local history, and the Potomac River Maritime Exhibit all in one go.

It's rooted here. Not generic. If you climb the tower, the spiral stairs are narrow and original. You've been warned.

5. Catch a Sunset at the Leonardtown Wharf 🌅

The Wharf doesn't need to prove itself. It just works.

Get ice cream at Frog Town Ice Cream Shop right on the water, walk the boardwalk, and let the kids roam while you pretend you're not watching the clock. You'll definitely get a solid view of McIntosh Run.

Parking can still be a problem. Some things are beyond fixing.

6. Go Fast at the Maryland International Raceway 🏎️

If your family hears engines and immediately gets interested, MIR in Budds Creek is the move. It's loud, fast, and world-class in the drag racing world.

Check the schedule for "Test & Tune" nights or one of their other great events. Bring ear protection, even if someone says they'll be fine. That sentence has a zero-percent success rate.

7. Explore the Calvert Marine Museum 🦦

It's in Solomons, and yes, we're counting it. If you've lived here long enough, the Calvert Marine Museum is already in the local rotation.

Start with the otters. That's not negotiable. Then move through the lighthouse and the marsh walk. The bridge is the only variable, sometimes it's fine, sometimes it's a test of character.

8. Hike the Trails at St. Mary's River State Park 🚲

This is a solid reset button. The park features a 7.5-mile trail loop around the lake that's great for mountain biking or a long family walk. It has that tucked-away feeling that locals tend to underuse.

Go ambitious with the full loop or just hit the water's edge. Both count as a win.

9. Step Back in Time at Historic Sotterley 🏛️

Located in Hollywood, Sotterley has a slower pace. The 18th-century plantation house, gardens, and waterfront trails feel specific and real, not like a theme park.

You can do the guided tour or just wander the grounds. It’s a few hours well spent on the Patuxent.

10. Visit the "Enchanted Woods" at Annmarie Sculpture Garden 🧚

Annmarie Sculpture Garden (just over the bridge in Dowell) is a reliable call. Kids lock into the Fairy Lolly and woodland trails quickly. Adults get an outing that’s actually pleasant and artistic.

The sculpture garden has the right amount of whimsy. Not too much, not too little. If you want something creative that doesn't feel like it's trying too hard, this is it.

11. Picnic at Elm's Beach Park 🏖️

Elm's Beach is the go-to for a Chesapeake Bay beach day that’s manageable. Pack lunch, bring the sand toys, and claim a spot. No big production. Just water, space, and a playground for when they get bored of the sand.

Get there early on busy weekends. Parking is the local gatekeeper.

12. Go "Old School" at Cecil's Old Mill 🪵

Cecil's Old Mill in California/Great Mills is a quieter stop. It has that authentic St. Mary's character that’s hard to fake. Browse the local crafts, antiques, and the historic mill works. It’s not flashy, and that’s why we like it.

13. Ride the Three Notch Trail 🚴

The Three Notch Trail is our local multi-use "highway," running parallel to Rt 235 without the actual cars. It stretches through trees and neighborhoods, perfect for walking, biking, or convincing a child to keep moving for five more minutes.

14. Get Spooked at the Old Jail Museum 🚔

The Old Jail Museum in the heart of Leonardtown is small, a little strange, and worth the 20-minute stop. It’s part of the St. Mary’s County Museum Division and has a surprising amount of personality for such a compact space.

15. Reenactment Days at Historic St. Mary’s City ⚔️

When St. Mary's leans into living history, it commits. Whether it's a Revolutionary War weekend or a Militia muster, these events at Historic St. Mary’s City or Point Lookout are loud and costume-heavy. Local history around here doesn't stay in a display case, it still shows up in full kit.
